Tier-one banks post stronger capital ratios ahead of new thresholds
Higher retained earnings have lifted buffers, giving lenders room for loan growth.
Large lenders reported stronger capital ratios in their latest disclosures, comfortably ahead of the higher thresholds that take effect next year.
The improvement reflects a combination of retained earnings and more conservative risk-weighting on legacy exposures.
Room to lend
Analysts said the stronger buffers give the banks headroom to expand credit, provided they can find borrowers with the appetite to take it.
Deposit growth continued to outpace loan growth across the sector, keeping loan-to-deposit ratios modest.
