NGX Starts the Week Strong as Trading Activity Splits Between Leaders, High-Volume Stocks

Nigeria's equities market opened the week with a fresh record for the All-Share Index, but Monday's session showed that the strongest price moves and the biggest trading flows were concentrated in different parts of the market.
The NGX All-Share Index gained 0.21% to close at 252,635.11 points, extending its year-to-date advance to 62.35%. Market capitalisation also increased by about ₦343.69 billion to ₦164 trillion.
UPL and CMFC Lead the Price Movers
University Press led the gainers with a 9.89% increase to ₦5, narrowly ahead of CMFC, which rose 9.82% to ₦3.58. ABC Transport and Eterna also posted gains of 9.80% and 9.62% respectively.
The broad advance was not limited to a handful of stocks. Market breadth remained positive, with 38 gainers against 25 decliners among ordinary equities in one end-of-day market compilation.
That gives Monday's record close a broader base than an index move driven by only one or two heavyweight stocks, although trading value remained concentrated among a smaller group.
Zenith Moves Closer to Its 52-Week High
Zenith Bank gained 0.37% to ₦135.40, leaving the stock close to its 52-week peak.
The move was modest compared with the near-limit gains posted by UPL and CMFC, but the proximity to the yearly high puts Zenith among the more closely watched large-cap names as the market enters another session of record-level trading.
Turnover Tells a Different Story
The biggest money flows were not concentrated in Monday's top percentage gainers.
Fidelity Bank dominated traded value with about ₦10.63 billion, followed by Seplat at ₦4.45 billion and Aradel at ₦3.74 billion. Zenith Bank and GTCO also recorded substantial turnover at about ₦3.40 billion and ₦3.26 billion respectively.
Seplat and Aradel both closed unchanged despite their large turnover figures. That contrast is important: heavy trading activity does not automatically translate into a price move.
It also means Monday's session had two distinct stories. Smaller and mid-priced stocks generated some of the sharpest percentage gains, while large-cap names continued to absorb substantial amounts of traded value.
Eterna Adds a Volume Signal
Eterna was another stock that stood out beyond its 9.62% price gain.
The stock's trading activity was reported at several times its recent average, making the combination of price movement and elevated volume more notable than the percentage gain alone.
High volume can indicate increased market attention, but it does not by itself establish whether the activity represents sustained accumulation, distribution or simply a change in participation. The next sessions will provide a clearer test of whether the elevated activity persists.
Reversals Keep the Market Uneven
Sovereign Trust Insurance also produced a sharp intraday reversal, highlighting how quickly individual stocks can change direction during the session.
At the close, SOVRENINS was up 9.17% at ₦2.62. LEGENDINT, meanwhile, fell 4.29% to ₦3.35, adding a weaker note to an otherwise positive session.
The contrast matters because the index's record performance does not mean every stock is participating in the same way. Some names are pressing higher, some are seeing unusually heavy activity, while others are still establishing fresh lows.
The Record Index Meets Concentrated Trading
Monday's session therefore looks less like a uniform market rally and more like a market where participation is being distributed unevenly.
The All-Share Index reached a new all-time high, while total traded value fell to roughly ₦39.72 billion despite volume rising to more than 1 billion shares. A large off-market Fidelity Bank transaction accounted for a significant portion of that volume.
For the next session, the key question is whether the record index level can continue to attract broader participation without relying heavily on isolated transactions or a relatively small group of active stocks. Price breadth, turnover concentration and whether high-volume names follow through will provide a clearer picture of the market's underlying strength.
