WACOT Renews Edo State Fertiliser Partnership to Expand Input Supply
WACOT Limited has renewed its agreement with the Edo State Government on fertiliser production through the Edo State Fertilizer and Chemical Company, a partnership that began in 2017.

WACOT Limited has extended its agreement with the Edo State Government on fertiliser production through the Edo State Fertilizer and Chemical Company Limited (ESFCCL) in Auchi, reaffirming a partnership that has been in place since 2017.
The renewal keeps WACOT involved in the operation and development of the Auchi fertiliser facility, one of the state-level blending plants that governments across Nigeria have promoted to reduce dependence on imported plant nutrients and keep inputs closer to farming communities.
A partnership built over nearly a decade
Since its inception in 2017, the WACOT–Edo arrangement has positioned ESFCCL as a domestic source of blended fertiliser for farmers in Edo and neighbouring states. The renewal signals continuity in the technical and commercial relationship rather than a wholesale restructuring of the plant's operations.
For Edo State, the plant represents both an industrial asset and an agricultural policy lever: local production shortens supply chains, reduces transport costs for farmers, and can stabilise prices when imported fertiliser markets are volatile.
Fertiliser access remains a binding constraint
Across Nigeria's farming belt, access to quality fertiliser at affordable prices remains one of the most frequently cited constraints on yields. Smallholders often receive inputs late in the season, at prices inflated by logistics and middlemen margins, which caps the return on other productivity investments such as improved seeds.
State-level blending operations like ESFCCL aim to shorten that chain, though they remain dependent on reliable feedstock supply, consistent offtake and competitive unit costs to stay viable against imported alternatives.
What the renewal implies
By renewing rather than exiting, WACOT is betting that domestic fertiliser production in Edo can scale with continued investment and more efficient distribution. The next phase will be measured in tonnes delivered to farms and the share of state demand met locally — metrics that will determine whether the decade-long partnership becomes a genuine model for other states.
